Raffaele Fitto aims to 'avoid risks' in EU funds for Madeira

European Commission Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto stated in Funchal his intention to create conditions to "avoid risks" for Madeira in the next European financial framework (2028-2034), enabling its continued development.

Fitto clarified that the exact amount for the region cannot yet be determined, as the next Multiannual Financial Framework is under discussion in the European Council and Parliament. He acknowledged Madeira's development and its potential in areas such as defence, space, and research, framing it within the new strategic role of outermost regions.

Miguel Albuquerque, President of the Regional Government, stressed the need to maintain differentiated treatment for Madeira under Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, noting that distance and transport costs remain permanent constraints.
