Regional Education Secretariat confirms 245 hired teachers and 90.4% of tenured staff remain at schools

The Regional Secretariat for Education, Science and Technology (SRE) has reported that 245 teachers were hired by September 7 for the 2026/27 academic year. The department also stated that 90.4% of tenured teachers remain at the same educational institution as the previous year.

These figures were released in response to criticism from the Madeira Teachers' Union (SPM), which the SRE accuses of conducting a "disinformation campaign." The secretariat, led by Elsa Fernandes, asserts that placements were made according to teachers' preferences and professional rankings, and that school needs are met, though occasional adjustments may occur during the year.

The decrease in hired teachers compared to 2025 is attributed to a reduction of 40 classes across various educational cycles, except for the 2nd cycle which saw an increase of nine classes. The SRE confirms that the placement process will continue throughout the month to address emerging needs.
