The Regional Secretariat for Education, Science and Technology (SRE) has issued a statement criticizing the Madeira Teachers' Union (SPM) for an alleged "disinformation campaign" regarding teacher placements for the 2026/27 academic year.
The SRE states that compared to the previous academic year, there will be 40 fewer classes, requiring fewer teachers. The Secretariat assures that teaching resource needs are met, without prejudice to teachers of classes with specific needs or those returning from extended sick leave. All placements were made according to teachers' preferences, professional ranking, and established tender conditions.
The statement adds that school needs are not static, and teachers will be placed on a punctual basis throughout the academic year to cover absences. The SRE guarantees that "there is nothing wrong with teacher placements," anticipating and adopting measures to overcome issues, despite a context of teacher departures and retirements.
