The Regional Government of Madeira is evaluating the possibility of implementing a public-private solution to improve veterinary care services on the island.
This approach aims to support families facing economic difficulties and to address situations involving stray animals. Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, Nuno Maciel, advocated for partnerships between the public and private sectors as the preferred route, rather than establishing a public clinic.
Maciel explained that the private sector could manage service provision, while the government would intervene with "social compensation" for disadvantaged households and for the management of stray animals. A project spanning multiple municipalities is reportedly under development, though further details have not yet been released.
