World Cleanup Day, observed on September 20, mobilizes volunteers globally for public space cleanups and waste management awareness.
The initiative, with roots in a 2008 Estonian civic movement, was promoted internationally from 2018 by the Let’s Do It! World organization. In 2023, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed September 20 as World Cleanup Day, with the UN-Habitat program facilitating its observance.
The goal is to combat the global solid waste problem, including marine litter, by cleaning areas like streets, parks, beaches, and rivers, while also promoting environmental education, habit change, and civic responsibility. The date coincides with the end of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, facilitating outdoor activities.
