The clinical director of the Madeira Regional Health Service (SESARAM), Júlio Nóbrega, stated in the Legislative Assembly that the situation of patients in the corridors of Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital is unacceptable.
Nóbrega linked the problem to an increase in clinical discharges and social changes, such as society's reduced availability to care for elderly relatives. "We cannot have patients in corridors. It is not humane and from a technical and scientific point of view, it is also wrong," he declared.
Although SESARAM has reinforced human resources and invested in infrastructure, the effort has not been enough to cope with the growing number of patients who remain hospitalized after receiving clinical discharge. The clinical director also advocated for health systems to adapt to increasingly outpatient-oriented medicine.
