Socialist MEPs Criticize PSD Açores' Political Exploitation of European Amendment

Socialist MEPs Sérgio Gonçalves (Madeira) and André Franqueira Rodrigues (Azores) have criticized PSD Açores MEP Paulo Nascimento Cabral for an alleged attempt at partisan political exploitation.

The dispute concerns the approval of an amendment to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, voted on in the European Parliament, aimed at protecting the EU's Outermost Regions. According to Gonçalves, the amendment was authored by French MEP Younous Omarjee (The Left) and co-signed by MEPs from various political groups, including socialists.

The socialist MEPs from Madeira and the Azores refute the notion that socialists opposed the amendment or that it was due to the PSD, calling it "enormously false." "It is regrettable that the social democrat deputy does not demonstrate the ability to place the interests of the Outermost Regions above purely partisan interests," stated André Franqueira Rodrigues.
