The Vatican has excommunicated the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X following the ordination of four new bishops without the authorization of Pope Leo XIV. This act was classified as schismatic by the Holy See, escalating an long-standing conflict between Rome and this ultra-traditionalist group.
In addition to the excommunication, the Vatican has declared certain sacraments administered by the Fraternity's ministers invalid, including confession and marriages. This decision affects tens of thousands of faithful across several countries, who are now officially treated as separated from the Catholic Church.
The primary reason for the punishment was the consecration of bishops without pontifical mandate, a grave violation of canon law. Despite the severity of the decision, the Vatican has expressed willingness to welcome members of the community who wish to return to full communion with the Catholic Church.
