Victor Freitas, a prominent figure in the Socialist Party of Madeira and former leader of its youth wing, is the interviewee for the ‘Rostos da Autonomia’ initiative, promoted by DIÁRIO in partnership with the Legislative Assembly of Madeira to mark the 50th anniversary of the Political-Administrative Statute.
Arriving in Madeira in 1976 from Mozambique with his family, Freitas recalls adapting to a rural reality in Santana, contrasting with his previous life. His foray into politics began early, with participation in civic actions as a child, such as collecting signatures for road construction, where many people who couldn't sign used their finger to mark the paper.
As a teenager, he attempted to establish a youth association in Santana, but the project did not receive official support. Later, he joined the Socialist Youth, where he would play a leadership role, marking the beginning of his political career. Freitas highlights Education and Health as the most positive aspects of the 50 years of Autonomy, and the lack of political alternation as the most negative point.
