The Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) has warned of an increased risk of wildfires on Madeira Island in the coming days. The forecast predicts a gradual worsening of weather conditions, with strong winds and low relative humidity, expected to last until at least Tuesday, September 15th.
The risk is considered particularly high in the higher areas and in the eastern and western extremes of the island. Winds are expected to be predominantly from the north/northeast, with gusts potentially reaching 60 km/h in exposed areas. Air humidity is predicted to decrease, with only weak recovery during the night in higher regions, conditions that could favor ignition and rapid spread of potential rural fires.
Civil Protection recommends the public adopt preventive measures and comply with current restrictions, including the prohibition of bonfires and controlled burns between April 1st and October 31st. They also advise avoiding the use of spark-generating equipment in rural areas and following official instructions.
