Younous Omarjee, President of the European Parliament's Committee on Regional Development, has pledged to intervene in the negotiations for the EU's next financial framework.
Omarjee guaranteed he would fight to ensure Madeira "does not lose a single euro" of European funds, following a three-day visit to the region by a delegation of MEPs. He assured that the European Parliament would "rise to the occasion" during discussions on the future of EU funding.
He stated the visit allowed for concrete verification of the EU's presence in the lives of Madeirans through investments in housing, mobility, living conditions, and the transition to a greener economy. Omarjee reiterated the idea that Madeira represents a "new centrality" for the EU, addressing strategic challenges such as island status, energy, transport, and climate transition.
