The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) held a public outreach event in Funchal as part of their campaign “Break with Injustices – New Course for Portugal, A Better Life”. The party is advocating for an extraordinary increase in pensions and retirement benefits starting in 2026.
Ricardo Lume, a member of the PCP's Central Committee, highlighted the increasing difficulty of living on low pensions, exacerbated by the general rise in prices. According to the party, approximately one in four retirees receives a pension below the IAS (537.13 euros), and 80% earn less than 1.5 IAS (around 805 euros).
To address this situation, the PCP has submitted a legislative proposal to the Assembly of the Republic. It calls for an interim minimum monthly increase of 50 euros for all pensioners, effective from July 1, 2026. This increase would affect not only the monthly income but also the calculation base for pension updates in January 2027.
