ADN Madeira has called on Portuguese MEPs to place the reduction of port cost overruns in the Outermost Regions (ORs) on the European agenda. The proposal aims to leverage the future Association of OR Ports to seek more favorable conditions for regular passenger, vehicle, and freight connections between Madeira and the mainland.
The party clarifies that the proposal does not involve the European Union financing a ferry operation, but rather reducing structural costs associated with being outermost. This would be achieved through financing infrastructure, regulatory adaptations, and conditions that make port tariffs linked to territorial continuity especially competitive, referencing the most accessible in the EU.
ADN Madeira argues that the Republic and Portuguese MEPs should act within European instruments to reduce the permanent costs of insularity, while the Region and APRAM work on the tariff and port component. The proposal aims to complement the model for a regular maritime link between Madeira and the mainland, increasing the operation's own revenues and reducing the necessary public compensation.
