The CDU has accused the Regional Government of contributing to the abandonment of Madeira's rural areas, pointing to the former Fontaínhas school in Quinta Grande parish as an example of a lack of investment and public services.
During a political initiative focused on rural areas, CDU regional coordinator Edgar Silva stated that the school building, currently vandalized, shows how governance leaves populations unprotected. Silva argued that after the school's closure, "nothing, in alternative, was achieved" to serve the population.
The communist leader maintained that the situation in Fontaínhas reflects "structural inequalities" in the region and warned of the isolation of several localities where access to health, education, communication, and security services is increasingly limited. Edgar Silva believes that the closure of schools, post offices, and health services exacerbates obstacles to human and social development.
