The CHEGA parliamentary group in the Assembly of the Republic has submitted a proposal recommending the Portuguese government temporarily suspend the application of the Schengen Agreement with Spain. This initiative follows events in Ceuta and Melilla, where a mass entry of migrants occurred after border controls collapsed.
According to CHEGA deputy Francisco Gomes, elected for Madeira, the proposal suggests Portugal activate the mechanism provided for in the Schengen Borders Code to temporarily re-establish border controls with Spain. This measure would remain in effect until the situation at the Spanish-Moroccan border is normalized.
The party also advocates for Portugal to formally express its concern to Spanish authorities and encourage Madrid to strengthen the control of the European Union's external borders, in compliance with Schengen Area obligations. Gomes emphasized that free movement requires responsibility and that the security of external borders is a shared duty.
