The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has presented a bill to the Assembly of the Republic aimed at establishing a National Compensation Scheme for Maritime Freight Transport Overcosts. The proposal, introduced by MP Filipe Sousa, intends to cover transport links between mainland Portugal and the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores, in both directions, as well as inter-island transport.
The goal is to create a "Goods Mobility Subsidy" that could cover up to 100% of eligible costs, such as sea freight, port fees, and logistical charges associated with island status. JPP argues that this measure could reduce the cost of living in Madeira and the Azores and enhance the competitiveness of regional products.
The party emphasizes that cost reductions should benefit end consumers, asserting that territorial continuity also applies to consumer goods. JPP cites the existing model in the Canary Islands, Spain, as a reference and suggests the scheme be funded by the State Budget, also considering European funds.
