A team from the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory (LREC) inspected the site of a rockfall on Madeira's north coast, near the Ladeira da Vinha tunnel, on Monday, August 24th. The incident partially obstructed the expressway towards São Vicente.
Rock-scaling specialists from the Regional Directorate for Roads had previously assessed the escarpment, determining the road could safely reopen the same day. However, the Regional Secretariat for Equipment and Infrastructure, via LREC, has established a new monitoring plan.
The initial phase involves identifying additional risk points and documenting geological weaknesses in the escarpment overlooking the VR2, particularly around the area affected by the fallen material. A later phase will involve data collection to create a 3D model of the escarpment, aiding in the analysis of potential future rockfall trajectories.
