A woman from Madeira, Ermínia Pinto, has had her right arm amputated after being rescued alive, nearly 24 hours after being trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building in Venezuela.

The incident occurred in Catia La Mar, La Guaira, following powerful earthquakes that struck the country on Wednesday. According to Correio da Manhã, Ermínia Pinto, who directs the Luso-Venezuelan Folklore Centre of La Guaira, suffered severe crush injuries.

Ms Pinto remains in hospital recovering from her injuries. Her son, Juan Pinto, has launched an online fundraising campaign to help cover his mother's medical expenses, describing the experience as very difficult and stating the funds will be used for medicines, consultations, and ongoing treatment.
