A delegation from the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) in Madeira met with the Representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of Madeira to discuss issues concerning crucial public projects and investments.
PCP Regional Coordinator Edgar Silva stated that "various issues were presented regarding the enormous financial overrun in the New Hospital works and unacceptable delays in the construction." Silva criticized what he termed a "very serious error in project management" by the Regional Government, pointing to the "fragmentation of the project" into multiple public tenders as the cause for costs estimated to be more than triple the initial forecast.
The PCP demands clarity on who will pay the additional costs and what the new funding sources will be. They also question whether the Regional Government has a new cost-benefit analysis and environmental impact study, and if the Republic's Government is prepared to cover the expenses. Madeira needs to know if the State Budget will finance the deficit project and if the Republic deems the New Hospital viable, with the population deserving information on the completion date, which the PCP estimates could be postponed beyond 2031.
