PS Madeira Demands Respect for Municipalities and Swift Action from MAI on New PSP Police Stations

PS-Madeira president, Célia Pessegueiro, criticized the "lack of rigor" from the Minister of Internal Administration (MAI), Luís Neves, and the "continuous disrespectful stance" of the Regional Government towards municipalities.

According to Pessegueiro, the minister's recent visit to Madeira showed a "profound lack of knowledge" of the institutional understandings already established between the MAI and municipalities for the construction of new PSP police stations. The socialist leader regretted that the minister ignored the steps already consolidated with the Machico municipality, which presented a new location for the station in early 2026.

PS-Madeira considers the minister's "unacceptable institutional arrogance" for not inviting the Mayor of Machico to accompany the official visit. With the exception of Porto Santo, the processes for new PSP facilities in Madeira are based on direct partnerships with municipalities, such as in Santa Cruz and Ponta do Sol, where projects are advanced.

Pessegueiro also criticized the "constant interference" of the regional executive in announcing solutions for the police stations, when these processes are being handled directly between municipalities and the MAI. She highlighted the interventions by the Machico Municipal Chamber to improve the conditions of the current PSP building, underscoring the role of municipalities.
