The JPP party's representative in the Assembly of the Republic, Filipe Sousa, has introduced a resolution project calling for an immediate reduction in the tax burden on fuels. The initiative also proposes an automatic mechanism to lower the Tax on Petroleum Products (ISP) and measures to control margins and protect consumers from rising prices.
Sousa highlighted the price difference between Portugal and Spain, noting that a 50-liter gasoline fill-up costs approximately 14 euros more in Portugal, and a 50-liter diesel fill-up is about 8.20 euros more expensive. The JPP suggests reducing fuel taxation to the lowest legally permissible level and utilizing European mechanisms for further reductions.
The proposal also includes returning any extraordinary VAT revenue generated by higher fuel prices back to consumers through tax cuts. Furthermore, the project suggests temporarily limiting commercial margins on fuels and bottled gas, potentially setting maximum prices for LPG, and increasing support for vulnerable families.
Sousa warned that rising fuel costs impact transportation, agriculture, and distribution, ultimately affecting food prices and the overall cost of living for Portuguese families.
