PS Proposes Fuel Tax Reduction in Madeira

The Socialist Party (PS) in Madeira advocates for a fiscal neutrality mechanism for fuels by reducing the Tax on Petroleum and Energy Products (ISP). The proposal aims for a decrease that could reach 14 cents per liter for gasoline and seven cents for diesel.

Socialists criticized the Regional Government's fiscal policy, arguing that the tax burden on fuels in Madeira is higher than on the mainland. According to data presented by the PS, the ISP in the region is 47.4 cents per liter for gasoline and 33.6 cents for diesel, compared to 41.9 and 26.5 cents, respectively, on the mainland.

The party also highlighted the increase in regional tax revenue, indicating that by August, the Regional Government had collected an additional 33.4 million euros in VAT and ISP compared to the same period in 2025. The PS argues that this additional revenue, stemming from inflation and rising fuel prices, should be returned to families and businesses through ISP reduction, viewing the measure as a way to protect regional income and economic activity.
