A rare malaria outbreak has affected six workers at Frankfurt Airport, with two confirmed deaths. German health authorities describe the incident as exceptional, with the most probable hypothesis being the arrival of a transmitting mosquito on a plane from an endemic area.
The first cases were recorded in early July. Malaria, transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes and not human contact, has led to increased surveillance for possible vectors imported by air. The possibility of an insect surviving a flight and biting workers is considered rare but not impossible in large airport facilities.
Authorities emphasize that this is an unusual and contained situation, with no indication of sustained transmission outside the airport. The case highlights how major global infrastructure can be unexpected entry points for biological risks, although the practical impact on Frankfurt's population is considered minimal.
