The Regional Government of Madeira has announced that approximately 30 patients who are medically cleared for discharge, currently occupying beds in Dr. Nélio Mendonça and Marmeleiros hospitals, will be transferred to private social solidarity institutions (IPSS) starting this week. This initiative aims to alleviate pressure on healthcare units and prevent the cancellation of surgeries due to bed shortages.
Regional Government President Miguel Albuquerque stated that hospital stays cost around 110 euros per day, compared to approximately 62 euros in IPSS. The government is negotiating with IPSS for new places and aims to transfer these 30 individuals this week. Furthermore, 173 new nursing home beds are expected by the end of September, with six new homes under construction to increase capacity.
Additional public accommodation solutions are being prepared, including adapting the former Ponta do Parque school and utilizing spaces within the Seixal Health Center. Albuquerque noted that project timelines depend on necessary administrative and legal procedures.
