18 Years Ago, Low-Cost Airlines Drastically Reduced Madeira Travel Prices

Eighteen years ago, in July 2008, the travel market to Madeira experienced intense competition with the arrival of new low-cost airlines. This situation resulted in a sharp decrease in fares, allowing passengers to find more affordable tickets for travel to and from Funchal.

A notable example was easyJet's entry onto the Lisbon-Madeira route. With the launch of its online booking system, the airline offered promotional tickets starting from 25.99 euros per leg, including airport taxes. This move signaled a shift in the aviation sector, intensifying competition on a route traditionally served by a few carriers.

Around the same time, the French low-cost carrier Transavia.com advertised flights between Paris and Madeira for one euro. While the base price was symbolic, the final cost for passengers, including taxes and administrative fees, reached 152.88 euros, indicating that the promotional price only covered the base fare.
