Iniciativa Liberal (IL) has expressed concern regarding the recent seizure of dried fish, particularly traditional dried gaiado, in Caniçal. The party advocates for clearer regulations for this activity, emphasizing the need to balance food safety compliance with the preservation of a practice tied to the parish's history and economy.
António Nóbrega of IL urged competent authorities to clarify the necessary conditions for fishermen and producers to prepare, dry, and market gaiado legally. While acknowledging the importance of oversight, IL stresses that rules must be clear, proportional, and suitable for artisanal production, suggesting technical support and potential regulatory review.
The party proposed three key measures: immediate clarification of rules for artisanal dried gaiado production, technical assistance for fishermen and producers to meet requirements, and adaptation of existing regulations if they do not suit the traditional activity. IL is monitoring discussions between the Regional Directorate of Fisheries and the Maritime Zone Command of Madeira, seeking a swift and concrete solution for affected professionals, asserting that food safety, legal compliance, and tradition preservation are not mutually exclusive.
