The JPP party has denounced the dilapidated state of the Paul do Mar Wastewater Treatment Plant (ETAR), an infrastructure that initially cost around 5 million euros. According to JPP, after two decades, the plant reflects a "lack of planning, maintenance, and strategic vision" by successive Calheta Municipal Council executives.
Councillor Basílio Santos highlighted that the infrastructure is degraded, functioning only with primary treatment under precarious conditions, "far below what was projected and the environmental and public health needs." JPP deems the neglect of the facility without a recovery or modernization strategy unacceptable.
The party also expressed concern over new works announced by the Council, such as replacing drinking water pipes in Prazeres and Estreito da Calheta. JPP criticizes these interventions for not including wastewater networks, repeating "errors of lack of coordination and planning." Basílio Santos pointed out that in Estreito da Calheta, the Council plans to invest 3 million euros in 40 km of drinking water network without providing for a sewage system, leaving the municipality with only 4% of homes connected to the sanitation network.
