The Madeira Teachers' Union (SPM) has responded to criticism from the Regional Secretariat for Education, Science, and Technology by presenting "real cases" to substantiate its concerns regarding the teacher placement process in the region.
SPM coordinator Francisco Oliveira rejected the accusation of misinformation from the Secretariat, stating that the situations reported by the union have "faces" and "real lives." He cited the case of Cristina Gomes, a teacher awaiting placement after three years of service, despite applying to underserved areas.
Oliveira highlighted this case as evidence of the discrepancy between official statistics and the reality in schools, where "dozens, if not hundreds" of teachers face similar placement issues.
The union deems the problems of the current academic year "serious" and "cross-disciplinary," but identifies the preschool sector as the most concerning, criticizing the Regional Directorate for School Administration (DRAE) for alleged changes in criteria and resource reductions.
