Funchal city council held showcookings this week at the parish councils of Santo António and São Martinho, as part of its Funchal SEMEAR food strategy. The sessions, run by A Biqueira, attracted more than a hundred participants.
In Santo António, residents watched the preparation and tasted Caldo de Romaria, a traditional dish, while São Martinho presented Sopa de Castanha, a chestnut soup. Both events highlighted the island's culinary identity.
The sessions are part of a wider programme planned for all 10 parishes of the municipality. The aim is to promote traditional recipes, local and seasonal produce, and the passing on of food traditions to younger generations. Councillor Helena Leal and the parish presidents, Marcelo Gouveia and Marco Gonçalves, attended.
