Toyota has once again been the world's largest carmaker, holding the top spot for a sixth straight year. In 2025 the group sold roughly 11.3 million vehicles across the Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu and Hino brands, ahead of Volkswagen, which delivered about nine million.
Conventional hybrids drove the business, accounting for around 42% of global sales, while fully battery-electric vehicles made up just 1.9%. The company describes its approach as "multi-pathway", combining several technologies suited to each market's infrastructure.
The strategy is paying off, with global sales up 4.6% on 2024. Still, its limited electric share could become a liability if demand grows faster than expected, particularly in Europe and China. Toyota plans to expand its electric lineup and targets 1.5 million electric units a year by 2026.
