Pieces with History at O Lyceu Museum Centre: Learning Languages, Bringing Peoples Closer

The O Lyceu Museum Centre presents an early 20th-century teaching chart, highlighting French language education and linguistic diversity.

The O Lyceu Museum Centre, in collaboration with ESJM, is exhibiting a historical piece: the chart "Tableaux auxiliaires Delmas, n.º 5 La maison extérieure, les ouvriers, les outils Bordéus", dating from the early 20th century.

Produced in the context of the 1902 French education reforms, this teaching material was intended for French language instruction, favouring direct observation and image-vocabulary association without translation. The collection, comprising 16 thematic charts, depicts everyday scenes and was a significant pedagogical resource in Portugal, where French was a central foreign language in secondary education.

The piece, presented as part of European Day of Languages, serves as a historical testament to professions, techniques, and housing models of the era, emphasizing the importance of linguistic diversity as a bridge between peoples and cultures.
